In this age of pop psychology, where everyone seems to be a life coach, meditation expert, or mindfulness guru, finding genuine help can be challenging.
Since much of our past experience and memories are stored in our bodies, simply talking about trauma often doesn't provide the release needed to move forward.
Throughout history, human beings have used expressive arts to make sense of their world, communicate, and celebrate life. The arts offer ancestral ways of healing accessible to everyone, with theatre being the art form closest to real life.
As children, we learn about and make sense of our world through play. It is with the same spontaneity and lightness that we approach Creative Care. Through play, we can dedramatize much of what causes our suffering. We can experiment with different reactions, feelings, and identities by "trying on" different roles.
Paradoxically, accessing our authentic selves is often easier when we engage in role-playing and pretend to be someone else. In dramatherapy, we refer to this as the "me not me" paradox. By embodying and playing with our archetypes, we gain deeper insights into ourselves and discover new ways of responding.
